In 2004, Solo Chicken Productions Artistic Producer, Lisa Anne Ross had the incredible opportunity to travel to Nunavik in northern Quebec to facilitate a mask & puppetry workshop for youth. From that first year the program bloomed into a yearly event that became known as the Nunavik Theatre Arts Program. Each year, over the course of four to six weeks, the program offers students from the Innalik School in Inukjuak, Nunavik the opportunity to build masks & puppets and to write, rehearse and perform an original play for their community. The program in addition to offering students the opportunity to learn skills in theatre, art, music and dance also provides students with a safe, positive environment to explore and develop personal skills and to learn to use the arts as an alternate form of personal expression.
In 2010 & 2011 we were proud to have had the opportunity to offer this program in the community of Kangirsuk as well. In 2009, Lisa passed the facilitation reins to community arts advocate, Renee Devereaux and then to educator and puppeteer Noah Kenneally and community artist Natasha Eck in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 world renowned shadow artist and puppeteer, Clea Minaker joined the faciliation team! In 2012 this program boasted nine years of operation and felt proud to have become an important part of the fabric of youth programming in the community of Inukjuak.
After a two year hiatus, Solo Chicken Productions is thrilled to report that we are currently planning to offer the program at Innalik School in the fall of 2016 with a new team of artists! Stay tuned for details.
