Level 1 Improv

Embrace your impulses, sharpen your wit, and learn the ropes to performing on stage in this fun and lighthearted improv class for beginners! This class is perfect for first-time performers or anyone looking to brush up on their basics! Level 1 culminates in an informal showcase performance at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.

Instructors: Jean-Michel Cliche & Gill Salmon

Goal: To gain performance experience, play basic improv games, and have fun!

Class size: 12 - 18 people

Location: The Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte St, Fredericton, NB E3B 1M5. This space is equipped with an elevator and is wheelchair accessible.

Upcoming Dates: Wednesday Nights, 7:00 - 9:00 PM, September 4 - October 23 2024, with a showcase performance of October 26 2024

ACCESS & ADAPTATIONS

Solo Chicken is committed to doing all we can to make our programming as accessible as possible, which includes being clear about the space and any additional supports we offer. Level 1 Improv access information includes:

  • The space is accessible for students with limited mobility/mobility aides.

  • There is a single gender-neutral and wheelchair accessible bathroom a few meters from the class room.

  • Accessible parking and a curb cut directly in front of the lobby entrance.

  • Instructors are trained on inclusive and adaptable practices

  • Sensory accommodations (fidgets, headphones, weighted sensory tools)

  • Memory aides available (handouts)

REGISTRATION

Solo Chicken Productions endeavours to make training available to anyone and everyone looking to learn, play and create! This class is offered through a “Pay-What-You-Can” format. You will find a suggested price listed ($215), but you are encouraged to pay the amount you feel you best fits you! That might be $40 less than the suggest price… Or $20 more! Please consider that your tuition goes towards running the program itself, paying for instructor fees and space rentals, as well as supporting our projects!

  • Pay-As-You-Go

  • Supplementing your tuition with an energy exchange (ex: working the door for a Solo Chicken event!)

Meet the instructors

Jean-Michel Cliche (he/him)


JEAN-MICHEL CLICHE is a theatre artist, improviser and educator of Lebanese and French-settler descent. He has trained with Fight Directors Canada and is now New Brunswick’s most active Fight Director and Violence Designer. As an actor, he has had the great privilege of performing in major cities across the country as well as communities of all sizes throughout the Maritimes. He has over 15 years of improv experience, including coaching the competitive team at Ecole Sainte-Anne, founding the Hot Garbage Players, and now hosting improv classes through Solo Chicken Productions. As an educator, Jean-Michel has taught drama with the University of New Brunswick and Theatre New Brunswick. He is also the Associate Artistic Director of Solo Chicken Productions! Jean-Michel loves all things games, particularly the pen and paper roleplaying variety!

Gillian Salmon (she/her)


Gillian Salmon (she/her) is a writer, improviser, actor and stand up comedian whose writing has been featured at NotaBle Acts in 2022 and 2023. She is a Second City Conservatory Grad and has studied extensively in sketch comedy writing and improv. She loves to collaborate locally with Dead Serious Comedy and most recently, wrapped filming as a principal actor in Strike Pictures’ feature film, “Do I Know You from Somewhere?”
